After having significant tech problems with adding members to this tribe- I am opening it up to the public. Remember keep to the subject matter of law and law practice related discussions. The tribe is for lawyers, paralegals and law students to discuss topical matters relevant to the practice of law.

So have at it.

    Okay, here's a question.

These two hours of elimination of bias in the profession and substance abuse CLE... is this a joke?

Not that these subjects are a joke, but...

Is one hour a year every three years in these two subjects any better than a fart in a wind storm?

They *are* jokes -- the subjects I mean. Well, "elimination of bias" is. Maybe if it weren't taught/run by hate-mongering leftists, I might take it seriously. I graduated from Boston University with a 3.4, not earth-shattering, but I didn't get a single interview ever, but I'm a white, male. I should've been handed a plum job with my diploma, right? These days, if you're anything but a straight, white, male, and you have a bar license, they practically hand you a job. Oh, and with females allowed to come into court in anything from track suits to after hours stuff, I'm going to pay any respect? I don't think so.

        Woah!

        I feel your angst.

However, my disdain for these two CLE requirements does not stem from my personal politics or resentment at the apparent unfairness of what you describe. I just don't see why "bias"and "drug abuse" are a part of mandatory CLE.

I mean, why stop there? Why not impose all kinds of mandatory instruction to keep your law license? An hour on recycling office products, an hour on physical fitness, an hour on retirement planning, an hour on compliance with OSHA requirements for the law office, an hour on the delivery of pro bono services, etc?

Or, better yet, why not just limit it to legal education and ethics?

FYI: you have to do 25 hours in three years. I have to do 15 hours a year in Texas. That's 45 hours versus 25 hours in three years. And I don't mind that. But on top of the extra hours I do for Texas, I have to pick up these two silly special CLEs that only California requires.

I just did the substance abuse yesterday- the most interesting thing I learned was that there is now strawberry flavored cocaine and Hindu Kush weed is now the most potent. Somehow, I really don't think that is what they had in mind when the Bar created this requirement. And who knew that IP lawyers had the highest rate of substance abuse in the profession. They must be drinking those red bull strawberry cocaine viagra drinks I learned about in my substance abuse class.
